Bariatric Blood Tests in Brisbane: What You Need to Know Before & After Surgery
If you’re preparing for gastric sleeve or gastric bypass surgery in Brisbane, you’re likely wondering which blood tests you need and when to do them. It can feel overwhelming, but staying on top of your blood work is one of the most important parts of ensuring a smooth recovery and long-term health.
Bariatric surgery changes how your body absorbs nutrients, so taking the right supplements and monitoring your levels regularly helps prevent deficiencies that can impact your energy, mood, immunity, and overall wellbeing.
Why Bariatric Blood Tests Are Important
After weight-loss surgery, your body may not absorb vitamins and minerals the same way it used to. This makes regular blood tests essential to:
- Detect nutritional deficiencies early
- Support your recovery
- Maintain energy and immunity
- Prevent long-term health complications
At Brisbane Obesity Clinic, your first 12-month dietitian package includes scheduled blood tests and personalised supplement plans.
When Are Bariatric Blood Tests Done?
To keep your health on track, blood tests are usually done at these stages:
Before Surgery
At the Wesley Pre-Admissions Clinic
After Surgery
- 3 months post-op
- 6 months post-op
- 12 months post-op
Long Term
Annually, or more often if your GP identifies a deficiency
(We always CC your GP so they stay updated with your results.)
After your first year, arranging ongoing blood tests becomes your responsibility, but we are always here to guide you.
What Do Bariatric Blood Tests Check?
Your dietitian and medical team will look for any nutrient issues caused by reduced absorption after surgery. Common tests include:
- Vitamin A – immunity and vision
- Parathyroid hormone (PTH) – regulates calcium, magnesium & phosphorus
- Active B12 – nerve health, blood cell function, prevents anaemia
- Folate levels
- Serum zinc
- Thiamine (B1)
- Liver function tests (LFTs)
- Electrolytes
- Serum magnesium
- Full blood count (FBC)
- Vitamin D
- Iron studies – low or high iron can both be harmful
- Lipid profile – for patients with cholesterol issues
- Blood glucose / HbA1c – for patients with diabetes or high blood sugar history
These tests help us understand whether deficiencies existed before surgery or developed afterwards.
Why Supplements Are Essential After Bariatric Surgery
Because your digestive system changes significantly after a gastric sleeve or bypass, it’s unlikely you’ll absorb enough nutrients from food alone. This is why lifelong daily supplementation is recommended for all bariatric patients.
Your supplement plan may vary depending on:
- Your blood test results
- The type of bariatric procedure you’ve had
- Any medical conditions
- Your recovery progress
Staying consistent with your supplements helps prevent fatigue, hair loss, muscle weakness, bone issues, and nerve problems.
