Mini-Gastric Bypass FAQs

Bypass / Mini Bypass FAQs

How much does the Mini-Gastric Bypass cost without private health insurance?

Without private health insurance the cost is approximately $26,000. This includes all out-of-pocket expenses such as the surgeon, surgical assistant, anaesthetist, follow up care, 12 months of dietitian care, 2-night hospital stay, and all testing.

How long will it take to recover after the Mini-Gastric Bypass?

Most patients take 2 weeks to recover following this procedure; however each patient is different. Most patients who come in for their 2-week post op dietitian appointment report that they are feeling FANTASTIC!

What are the post-operative restrictions?

  • No lifting for the first 2 weeks
  • No driving at least 1 week
  • No cardio exercise or swimming for 3 weeks
  • Small weights can be lifted up to 5kg 4-6 weeks post op.
  • No heavy lifting for 6 weeks post op.
  • No Smoking.

Do I need to see a dietitian before undergoing surgery?

Yes, all patients are required to see a dietitian before weight loss surgery. Your dietitian will help you follow a special pre-operative diet, which is important for reducing the size of your liver and making the surgery safer. It also helps with initial weight loss, improves your overall health, and prepares you for the dietary changes you’ll need to follow after the procedure. Seeing a dietitian before surgery is a key part of ensuring the best possible outcome.

Do I need to see a dietitian after surgery?

All bariatric patients will see our dietitians after their procedure to guide them through the different dietary phases. We schedule regular appointments with our dietitians for up to 12 months after surgery. There is no charge for any post-operation appointments during this time. After the 12-month period, we recommend that you continue your long-term care with your GP or a private dietitian.

Do I require to see a psychologist prior to having this procedure?

While a psychological assessment is not mandatory before surgery, patients who wish to speak with a psychologist are welcome to do so. We are happy to provide a referral upon request to support your wellbeing throughout your weight loss journey.

Will I need to take vitamin supplements?

Yes. Depending on your procedure, you’ll likely need to take supplements (e.g., vitamin B12, folic acid, iron) for at least a year. Our dietitian will assess your needs during checkups. Multivitamins are available for purchase at reception.

What about taking other medication after surgery?

Yes. You may need to adjust how you take them (e.g., using capsules, splitting larger tablets, or dissolving them). Always consult your prescribing doctor.

How much weight can I expect to lose?

Weight loss results vary from patient to patient, and the amount of weight you may lose depends on several things. A weight loss of around a kilo a week in the first year after the operation is possible, but half a kilo per week is more likely. Twelve to eighteen months after the operation your weekly weight loss is often less.
Remember that you should lose weight gradually. Losing weight too fast creates a health risk and can lead to a number of problems. Your main goal is to have weight loss that prevents, improves, or resolves the health problems associated with severe obesity. You need to be committed to your new lifestyle and eating habits. It is very important to set achievable weight loss goals from the beginning. Obesity surgery is not a miracle cure, and the kilograms won't come off by themselves.

Can I eat anything?

Eventually, yes—but in small portions. Focus on nutrient-rich foods. Avoid high-sugar, high-fat foods or drinks with empty calories (e.g., milkshakes), which can hinder results.

What about alcohol?

Avoid alcohol for at least 14 days post-surgery. After that, occasional consumption is okay. Keep in mind alcohol is high in calories and breaks down vitamins.

Will I suffer from constipation?

Some reduction in stool volume is normal due to lower food intake. If you experience any problems, let us know right away.

Is the Mini-Gastric Bypass reversible?

It may be possible, depending on your individual circumstances. The best way to determine whether this treatment option is suitable for you is to arrange a consultation with the team at Brisbane Obesity Clinic for a comprehensive assessment.

Can I fall pregnant following surgery?

Yes. It is recommended that patients who undergo this procedure should wait 12
months before trying to conceive. we find that many of our patients who have had difficulty conceiving whilst overweight, become pregnant more easily at a healthy weight.

I have sleep apnoea – will surgery help?

This is great news! Many of our patients with sleep issues have these resolved after bariatric surgery. It is important to keep your sleep physician informed of your surgery and weight loss.

Will I need plastic surgery for loose skin?

The amount of excess skin following significant weight loss can vary from person to person and may depend on factors such as the amount of weight lost, skin elasticity, age, and individual healing characteristics.

Some patients may choose to explore body contouring procedures to address excess skin after their weight has stabilised. In general, these procedures are not usually considered until 12–24 months after treatment, allowing the body and skin time to adjust to changes in body shape.

In some cases, the skin may continue to adapt naturally over time. For this reason, it is often recommended to allow sufficient time for healing and weight stabilisation before considering additional procedures.

A comprehensive assessment can help determine whether procedures such as abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) may be appropriate based on your individual circumstances, goals, and overall health.

Suitability for any surgical procedure can only be determined following a personalised consultation and clinical assessment.
