What is the cost of the Orbera Balloon insertion?

The cost is approximately $8,000. This includes the surgeon’s fee, the Orbera® device, dietitian support, hospital fees, and the anaesthetist’s fee.

What is the recovery time for the Orbera procedure?

Recovery time varies from patient to patient, but most people return to work within 3 days after the procedure.

Does the Orbera® Balloon have an item number for private health insurance claims?

No, unfortunately gastric balloons do not have a Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) item number in Australia. As a result, the procedure cannot be claimed through private health insurance.

Is the Orbera® Balloon TGA approved?

Yes, the Orbera® Balloon is approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) for use in Australia.

Who is NOT suited for the Orbera Balloon?

The Orbera Intragastric Balloon is not suitable for individuals who:

Are pregnant or breastfeeding
Have had previous gastric surgery
Have inflammatory diseases of the gastrointestinal tract
Have a condition with a risk of upper gastrointestinal bleeding
Have a large hiatal hernia (larger than 5 cm)
Have a structural abnormality in the oesophagus or pharynx, such as a stricture or diverticulum
Have any other medical condition that prevents elective endoscopy
Are taking aspirin, anti-inflammatory agents, anticoagulants, or other gastric irritants and are not under medical supervision

Is the Orbera Balloon permanent?

No. The Orbera Balloon is a temporary weight loss aid designed to support behaviour change. It is typically removed between 6 and 11 months after insertion.

How long does the Orbera Balloon remain in place?

The Orbera Balloon remains in place for 6 to 11 months following insertion, after which it is removed.

How much weight can I lose with the Orbera Balloon?

The Orbera Balloon is a tool to assist weight loss and should be used alongside a healthy diet, exercise, and lifestyle changes. Weight loss varies depending on your commitment, but on average, patients lose around 10–15 kg.

How long do I need to stay in hospital?

The Orbera procedure is performed as day surgery. While the procedure itself takes about 30 minutes, you can expect to stay in hospital for approximately 6 hours to ensure you’re fully awake and feeling well before going home.

Can I drink alcohol while the Orbera Balloon is in place?

Yes, but only in moderation. Keep in mind that alcohol provides empty calories and can hinder weight loss progress.

Will I feel hungry or deprived with the Orbera Balloon?

Most patients report feeling full sooner, as the balloon reduces the stomach’s capacity. When you follow the nutrition guidelines and eat slowly, you should feel satisfied after smaller portions. The Orbera Balloon is a tool to help you adjust your eating habits.

Will I feel unwell after the balloon insertion?

It’s common to experience nausea or discomfort for a few days after the balloon is inserted. This is your body’s natural response to the presence of the balloon. These symptoms usually subside within 48–72 hours. Sipping water slowly and limiting food intake can help ease this transition.

Will I need to take medication while the balloon is in place?

Some patients may experience acid reflux due to the reduced stomach space. In such cases, a proton pump inhibitor (e.g., Nexium) may be prescribed for up to 6 months. Not all patients will require medication.

Do I require to see a psychologist prior to having this procedure?

While a psychological assessment is not mandatory, patients who wish to speak with a psychologist are welcome to do so. We are happy to provide a referral upon request to support your wellbeing throughout your weight loss journey.

Do I need to see a dietitian before the Gastric Balloon insertion?

Yes. Our dietitians will guide you through a pre-procedure diet designed to support initial weight loss, improve your overall health, and help you prepare for the dietary changes required after the balloon is inserted.

Do I need to see a dietitian after the Gastric Balloon insertion?

Yes. All gastric balloon patients are supported by our dietitians throughout the program. You’ll be guided through each dietary phase with regular appointments scheduled right up until your balloon is removed. There is no charge for any post-insertion dietitian appointments.
