General Weight Loss Surgery FAQs
What is the cost of an initial consultation?
Patients with a valid GP referral and eligible Medicare coverage may have their initial consultation bulk billed.
If you do not have a valid referral or are not eligible for Medicare benefits, an initial consultation fee of $200 will apply.
Consultation fees and Medicare eligibility are subject to change and will be confirmed at the time of booking.
Can I have weight loss surgery without private health insurance?
Yes. You can have the Gastric Sleeve, Gastric Bypass, Mini-Gastric Bypass, or Orbera Balloon without private health insurance. Uninsured patients are liable for all costs associated with the procedure and can use their superannuation to cover the cost.

What is the impact of weight loss surgery on fertility?
Weight—whether too high or too low—can increase your chances of experiencing fertility
issues and complications during pregnancy. The relationship between obesity and fertility is complex and multifactorial, but weight loss has been shown to improve fertility levels. After bariatric surgery, it is possible to have a safe and healthy pregnancy with the support of a multidisciplinary team.
We recommend waiting at least 12 months post-surgery before trying to conceive.
Can I fall pregnant after weight loss surgery?
Yes, but it is recommended that you wait at least 12 months post-surgery before trying to
conceive. Many patients who previously experienced difficulty conceiving due to obesity report improved fertility once they achieve a healthier weight.
How long do I have to stay in hospital following surgery?
- Sleeve Gastrectomy: One-night stay.
- Roux-en-Y Bypass and Mini-Gastric Bypass procedures: Two-night stays in hospital.
How can I access my superannuation to pay for my surgery?
We will provide you with detailed instructions and an application form, which the surgeon
completes to access your superannuation.

Do I need to see a dietitian before undergoing surgery?
Yes. All patients are required to see a dietitian before weight loss surgery. Your dietitian will help you follow a special pre-operative diet, which is important for reducing the size of your liver and making the surgery safer. It also aids in initial weight loss, improves your overall health, and prepares you for the dietary changes you’ll need to follow after the procedure.
Do I need to see a dietitian after surgery?
All bariatric patients will see our dietitians after their procedure to guide them through the various dietary phases. We schedule regular appointments with our dietitians for up to 12 months after surgery, and there is no charge for any post-operative appointments during this time. After the 12-month period, we recommend that you continue your long-term care with your GP or a private dietitian.
How much weight will I lose after surgery?
Weight loss results vary from patient to patient. The amount of weight you lose depends on several factors, including your commitment to new lifestyle and eating habits. Obesity surgery is not a miracle cure; the pounds will not come off by themselves. An initial weight loss of around one kilogram per week in the first year is possible, though half a kilogram per week is more common. Twelve to eighteen months after surgery, your weekly weight loss typically slows. It is important to lose weight gradually, as rapid weight loss can create health risks. Ultimately, the goal is to achieve sustainable weight loss that improves or resolves health issues related to severe obesity.
Will I need to take vitamin supplements post-surgery?
Yes. Depending on the type of surgery you have, you will likely need to take vitamin
supplements for at least a year. During your post-surgical check-ups, our dietitian will assess whether you are receiving sufficient vitamin B12, folic acid, and iron.
We also offer multivitamin supplements for purchase at reception.
Can I dine out after my weight loss surgery?
Yes, you can. When dining out, consider ordering a small portion—such as an appetizer—and eat slowly. It can be helpful to finish your meal at the same pace as your
table companions. You may also want to inform your host in advance that you cannot eat a full meal. We can provide you with a dining card that indicates you have undergone bariatric surgery and require smaller portions.
When can I exercise after my procedure?
- Cardio exercise: Refrain for at least 3 weeks post-procedure.
- Weightlifting: Avoid for at least 6 weeks.
- Swimming: Do not resume for 3 weeks post-procedure.
How soon can I drive after my surgery?
Patients should not drive for at least one week following surgery.
When can I go swimming after weight loss surgery?
We advise waiting at least three weeks before swimming in a pool or the ocean.
This period allows your body and surgical wounds to fully heal, reducing the risk of infections and delayed healing.
